High quality GPS speedometer for automotive and marine applications

New England Instrument distributes a GPS Speedometer that is quick to install and provides a vehicle independent speed readout in automotive and marine applications.

Using data received from the Global Positioning Satellite network, the GPS Speedometer calculates accurate ground speed and displays it on a clear to read, analog display.

This high technology solution eradicates the dependency on vehicle specific parameters, thereby reducing installation time and eradicating the need for periodic calibration.

Powerful Performance

Designed for harsh automotive and marine environments, the speedometer features an easy to read dial and user selectable yellow or red backlights for night time use.

The ability to track 12 satellites simultaneously, enhanced receiver sensitivity and active antenna result in fast time-to-first-velocity-calculation as well as the ability to operate in the harshest RF environments such as canyons cities and harbours. Speed errors will occur in RF blackout zones such as tunnels. In the event of an RF blackout, the speed readout will go to zero.

Three dimensional velocity calculations are accurate to 0.2km/h and pulse output rates are updated 4 times per second. Automotive versions measure three dimensional speed, wheras marine versions measure horizontal speed only to eradicate speed errors due to sea conditions such as swells.

Hummingbird's GPS Speedometer can be supplied with the readout in kilometers per hour, miles per hour or knots.

Rugged Hardware

The GPS Speedometer, manufactured by Hummingbird Electronics, is supplied in a rugged ABS plastic enclosure that is water resistant. Rubber seals isolate the interior of the speedometer from the environment to prevent water vapour buildup and mildew.

Antenna connection for the active antenna is provided through a gold-plated threaded SMA connector. The active antenna is available in two options:

  • magnetic mount, suitable for mounting in the interior of the vehicle, for example under the dashboard, rear window sill or fibreglass instrument panel.
  • bulkhead mount, suitable for exterior mount, for example on the roof of the cab.

Power to the unit and backlight ground are provided through four colour coded wires.

For optimum performance, the antenna should be mounted horizontally and upright; and should have a clear view of the sky.

The speedometers fit a 85mm (3 3/8”) diamter hole, and bezels are available in black or white.
